Midnight Jazz Club “Obelisks” EP

Nestled in the northern rugged beauty of England comes a quartet from the heart of Newcastle, a bustling diverse city with a vibrant nightlife. Having formed back within the great pandemic of 2020, Midnight Jazz Club began toiling in the world of music and forging their sound. Composed entirely of instrumental music that is heavily rooted in post-metal and post-rock often with riffs drenched with heavy progressive tones that will carry you into a dynamic soundscape of lasting emotion. With choruses that will hit hard and transcend you deeper into intricate compositions and complexity, Midnight Jazz Club is able to deliver  memorable melodies and rhythms that are also able to be replicated on the stage for a diverse and energetic performance that you would be sure to enjoy and lose yourself.

Having released their debut EP album The Haunt back in 2023, the band quickly took to the stage to build on the momentum. Midnight Jazz Club is back with another amazing EP Obelisks that is set to be released on March 14th 2025. With three captivating tracks that carry you through a unique soundscape for around 25:19 minutes. So let's not waste anymore time and dive in.

Looking at the album art we have a monochromatic image of what appears to be a black pendulum hovering above a pound. The landscape is of small and subtle hills that roll into the center which helps center the image and draw your attention inwards. A clouded sky  sits above while there is an abstract opaque white triangle that leads into the central pendulum. The band's logo sits upper left while the album name rests within the bottom center with a unique but simple font. Simple album art but effective. A very progressive and minimalist or surreal feel. I very much like the concept here.

With a simple buzz that builds and carries behind a chilling post-metal riff that reminds you of TOOL. The drums build behind and the lead guitar takes off into a simple dynamic riff with the bass heavy with groove undertones that help build the depth. “Crystalline” opens the album with an emotional torrent of complexity that resonates in such a beautiful way.

“Refraction” opens with a simple post black metal tone that can even be influenced by bands like WILT but with a very progressive undertone that quickly picks up to carry you some post-rock tones. With a solid breakdown that helps build the intensity and emotion, this track hits with some decent time switches and flows amazingly.

Midnight Jazz Club has a solid sound and I personally enjoyed their latest album. Obelisks carry you on an emotional progressive instrumental wave that you can really lose yourself in. The complexities of time switches and dynamic atmospheric elements that build into hard hitting tones that are tinged in grove undertones really takes it home for me. The production value is on point as well with all the levels mixed with precision to execute a flawless album. You can hear some riffs that do sound a bit too similair to other bands, but perhaps that is just their influences that shine through. However, if you enjoy post-metal, post-rock and even elements of progressive metal or post-black metal, then you will surely enjoy these guys and what they have to offer. This is an album I believe you may want to add to your collection and it's out soon on the 14th of March 2025.

For me I give this album a 9/10.
